Library books are generally checked out for two weeks at a time. Readers in grades K-2 typically return or renew their books on their library visit each week. For readers enjoying longer chapter books, or who are just loving a particular book, renewal is always an option and the book does not need to be in their hands to do so!
Readers in grades 3 & up are taught how to use the self-checkout system, thus the quantity of books checked out at any given time is more flexible. They learn strategies for borrowing what they can keep track of, but if this is ever a challenge, Mrs. Huestis will work with them to find an amount that is just-right. Additionally, older students will check out books for independent reading or book clubs in their classrooms. These books are checked out automatically for an extended period of time!
Checkout reminders, or "Library Love Notes", are sent periodically to family emails, usually prior to each school break. Please make sure your most up-to-date contact information is listed in PowerSchool!
Because our library serves an entire K-8 population of readers, it is arranged into sections. Younger readers are encouraged to explore the Story Square which holds the "Everybody" (Picture) books, beginning chapter books, and rotating selections of graphic novels and nonfiction books written at just-right levels for them. Will they also explore other sections? Absolutely - they are curious, and as they get comfortable with the space, they will visit other areas like the nonfiction section. Does this mean that they might bring home a book they cannot read yet? Absolutely, and it is okay! Whatever the reason, this choice is filling a need for your reader. Encourage them to look at the pictures, read with them, ask questions, and make connections. Our Fiction section holds titles written for middle grades (3rd & up). They are longer in length, more complex in plot and content for independent reading, and are arranged by genre. Our Young Adult section gives middle school readers an area that feels like their own, and holds fiction titles and graphic novels written specifically for their age range. The Nonfiction section has books arranged by category, and includes materials to support classroom learning as well as general curiosity. Graphic Novels are extremely popular, and yes - they count as real books. All reading is real reading, and an engaged reader is a happy reader! 3 Ways Graphic Novels Benefit Reading Skills
